“We were caught by surprise when soldiers surrounded Tabit at 8 pm,” the village elder told. “They beat the people with rifle butts and chased all of the men outside the village. Then they started to rape about 200 women and girls, which lasted from Friday evening until 4 am on Saturday.

(3 Nov) The commander of the soldiers who collectively raped women and girls in Tabit, near El Fasher, on Friday, admitted that his men committed the mass rape. He also acknowledged that they beat and humiliated the men in Tabit. The villagers have rejected his apology. 

 

 

UNAMID Verification Team Visits Tabit village to Investigate Mass Rape Allegations

 

(10 Nov) None of those interviewed confirmed that any incident of rape took place in Tabit on the day of that media report. The team neither found any evidence nor received any information regarding the media allegations during the period in question.

(17 Nov) Sudan has refused to let U.N. and African Union peacekeepers visit a village in the western Darfur region to investigate allegations of mass rape for the second time this month, saying it was skeptical about the motives for the visit.

(17 Nov) [T]he confidential report found that the Sudanese government and military prevented the U.N. investigators from reaching the site of the alleged mass rape for more than 10 days, severely constraining their ability to collect physical evidence of sexual assault. Sudanese troops fanned out across the town in a show of strength and intimidation. Uniformed Sudanese officials also followed the UNAMID investigators as they broke up into several teams and spread out about the town to interview potential eyewitnesses, interfering with their ability to elicit honest answers..

(20 Nov) Excerpt from UNAMID Report: Beside access issue, significant challenges were faced on the ground during verification exercise. The SAF personnel were present in sizable numbers – in uniform and civil clothing – in Tabit. They followed the sub-teams during the verification exercise. Some of the sub-teams reported the interviews being captured on recording devices (mobile phone) by the SAF members. The behavior and responses of interviewees indicated an environment of fear and intimidation. Some of the sub-teams had to ask the military personnel to stop following them and also asked them to allow the conduction of interviews in some privacy.

(21 Nov) Sudan has asked the joint U.N.-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur to prepare to leave, a senior official said amid a dispute between the United Nations and Khartoum over an alleged mass rape in the region.

 

Worldwide Protests and Social Media for Darfur Mass Rape Grow

(23 Nov) In Sudan, a rape must be proved in the first few hours after the incident by conducting a medical examination of the victim. Rape victims have to obtain a document, Form 8, to admit the medical evidence. This form provides only limited medical information. The law requiring that victims obtain this form before receiving medical attention was overturned ten years ago.

  •  RSF gang-raped a 10 year old girl
  •  RSF gang-raped 20 women and girls
  •  Gang-raped 2 women (15 yr old/17 yr old)
  •  Raped 2 girls for 10 hours
  •  Raped a deaf woman

"Close to ten years since the much lauded Council’s referral of the situation in Darfur to the International Criminal Court, systematic and widespread crimes continue to be committed with total impunity in Darfur. It is indeed an understatement to say that we have failed the Darfur victims who continue to bear the brunt of these crimes," said Fatou Bensouda on 17 June 2014.
